The Canton of Geneva’s noise strategy is orientated around the protection of the population against noise pollution by 2030. This is explicitly based on action with respect to quality of life, well-being and health of the population. The Canton has now launched its “Noise 2030” strategy that principally targets noise emitted by road traffic. (Eighty per cent of urban noise pollution is caused by road traffic.)

“Quiet is not a luxury, it is a necessity.” (State councilor Antonio Hodgers)

The Canton of Geneva’s noise strategy is orientated around the protection of the population against noise pollution by 2030. About 125 million European citizens suffer from noise with direct and indirect health consequences (source: EU Joint Research Center). In Geneva, as State Councilor Antonio Hodgers reminds us in the introduction to his political vision on noise pollution, “in 2020 one in two Genevans said they suffered from noise making it a real public health issue ”.

Securaxis, with its innovative technology for analyzing and understanding the noise emitted by road traffic, is already working with various Geneva authorities, including SABRA (service for air, noise and non-ionizing rays).

Working with the high-end technology of Securaxis has allowed us to have access to consolidated data, to better link noise pollution to the composition of automobile traffic, and thus to better study the effectiveness of the speed reduction measures implemented to fight against road noise in downtown Geneva. The technology developed by Securaxis in this innovative project has proved to be a promising tool for the urban planning of the future. (Philippe Boyer, director SABRA)

This “Noise 2030” strategy aims to ensure a high quality sound environment by reducing noise emissions. The Canton will be able to coordinate the necessary tools and indicators allowing noise analysis to inform both citizens and city planners.

To implement the strategy in the daily life of the population and anticipating future action, Geneva authorities decided to target first road traffic – as the main cause of noise in the canton – with a view to controling the most noisy vehicles.

Securaxis solution

Combining Artificial Intelligence, acoustics and IoT, Securaxis’ technology allows for reporting in real-time on the noise emitted by road traffic and for counting and classifying vehicles. This is essential information for a detailed mapping of noise pollution emitted by road traffic and a prerequisite for relevant mitigation measures.

The noise radar powered by SecuraXis technology is distributed in Switzerland by SWISSTRAFFIC AG to monitor road traffic noise and analyze road traffic.

And Securaxis’S SONAL ™ traffic noise detection and analysis solution has been deployed by the OFEV (Federal Office for the Environment) on Swiss roads in order to verify the effectiveness of anti- noise solutions installed on specific road sections. It is also deployed in other European countries (France, Finland, Luxembourg and Portugal) for its additional  features such as traffic quantification and qualification (detection counting and classification of vehicles).
